This page explains what degerlia.com collects when you visit or contact us, how we use it, and who else handles it.

Who we are

degerlia.com is the website of DeGerlia Expert Consulting (DEC), the expert consulting practice founded by Tom DeGerlia. For questions about this policy or your information, email tom.degerlia@coloradodigital.com.

What we collect

When you contact us. The contact form asks for your name, email address, phone number, company (optional) and request details. The site also records when each message was sent and the IP address it came from.

When you browse. Google Analytics runs only if you click Accept in the cookie notice. If you do, it sends Google the page address (including anything in it, such as search words) and title; the page that sent you here; how long you stay, whether you scroll most of the way down a page, which links to other websites you click, which files you download, and when you start filling in a form and when you send it (not what you type); your browser, device, operating system, language and screen size; and a random identifier kept in a cookie. Google also receives your IP address, which it uses to estimate your city and country. If you click No, thanks or don't answer, Google Analytics does not run.

Pages also load style and script files from cdn.jsdelivr.net and icons from cdnjs.cloudflare.com. Like any web request, each of these gives the service your IP address and basic browser information.

Site and security records. The site's activity log records each form submission (your name, email and IP address) and events such as missing pages, errors and blocked spam, with the IP address, page and referring page. To limit spam, the site briefly records each submission's IP address and accepts at most five messages an hour from one address. Pantheon, our host, keeps its own server logs, which include IP addresses.

The activity log does not record what you search for, but your search words appear in the page address, which our host's server logs receive (as does Google Analytics, if you accepted it). Visitors cannot create accounts or post comments.

How we use it

  • To read and answer your message, check for conflicts of interest, and discuss possible work.
  • To send the contact form's automatic acknowledgment to the email address you entered. It repeats nothing you wrote.
  • To keep the site running and limit spam and abuse.
  • To see how the site is used, through Google Analytics, if you accept it.

We do not sell personal information.

Where it is stored and who handles it

  • Pantheon hosts the website and its database, where a copy of every contact-form message is stored, and serves pages over HTTPS through its content delivery network. Only the site's administrators can see stored messages and the activity log, through the site itself or through our hosting account.
  • Email. The site sends each message through Pantheon's mail system to tom.degerlia@coloradodigital.com, Tom DeGerlia's own mailbox on the domain of Colorado Digital, the Denver software company he built and led. Google hosts that mailbox.
  • Google (if you accept Analytics), cdn.jsdelivr.net and cdnjs.cloudflare.com receive the browsing information described above.

We don't share your information with anyone else unless you agree or the law, a subpoena or a court order requires it.

Cookies and browser storage

  • dec-cookie-agreed (plus dec-cookie-agreed-version if you click Accept) remembers your answer to the cookie notice for 365 days (some browsers shorten this). We keep no other record of your answer.
  • _ga and _ga_5QEF64T039 are set by Google Analytics, only if you click Accept: a random identifier for your browser and details of your current visit. Each page you view renews them for two years, so they expire two years after your last visit (some browsers shorten this).
  • Sending the contact form sets a session cookie (its name starts with SSESS) so the site can show "Your message has been sent" on the next page. Your browser keeps it for up to about 23 days unless you clear it; a matching session record on our server includes your IP address.

To change your answer to the cookie notice, delete this site's cookies in your browser; the notice will appear again. The site does not respond to browser Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signals, so use the notice to choose whether Google Analytics runs. Google also offers a browser add-on that keeps your visits out of Google Analytics on every site.

When you send the contact form, your browser saves the email address you entered to fill in the form next time. It stays until you clear this site's data in your browser.

How long we keep it

  • Messages stored on the site, and their email copies, are kept until we delete them. Nothing on the site deletes them automatically.
  • Each time the site's scheduled maintenance runs (about hourly), the activity log deletes all but its 1,000 newest entries.
  • The short-term records used to enforce the hourly limit and to block spam are deleted within hours. Activity-log entries about blocked messages follow the activity-log rule above.
  • Session records on our server are deleted automatically some time after two days without use.
  • Our host's backups, and the test copies of the site's database, can hold messages and records for a time after we delete them from the live site.
  • Pantheon, Google and the other services above keep their own records under their own policies.

Your choices

  • To ask what information we hold about you, or to have it corrected or deleted, email tom.degerlia@coloradodigital.com. We will reply to every request. Before sharing or deleting anything, we will confirm the request comes from the email address that sent the message, and we may keep a record of an inquiry where we need it to check conflicts or where the law requires it.
  • To keep your message off the website, email us directly instead of using the form.
  • You can delete or block cookies in your browser settings.

Confidential case details

Please hold confidential case details until conflicts are cleared. For legal matters, start with the party names, court and key deadline. Anything sent through the form is stored on the site and emailed.

Changes to this policy

If our practices change, we will update this page and the date at the top.
